On the 22 and 23 February 2019, The Ministry of Education and Science, in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, the Ministry of Research and Equality of Hamburg and the University of Latvia, gathered academia, science and research representatives from Baltic Sea region countries and beyond at the Academic Centre for Natural Sciences of University of Latvia.

High-level meeting on science

On the 22 February 2019, before the public part of the conference, a High-Level Meeting on Science of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) was held at the House of Nature of the UoL, gathering more than 40 participants from 11 countries and the European Union. The meeting was chaired by Līga Lejiņa, the State Secretary for the Ministry of Education and Science.

Discussion topics of the meeting were maintaining the research excellence and promotion options, support to the mobility of researchers, enhanced participation in the framework programme of the European Union, transfer of knowledge and innovations to the public, and links with industry. In the conclusion of the meeting, the participants summarised their common view on the science policy of the Baltic Sea Region in a joint notice that is available on CBSS website.

Project “Baltic Science Network” is implemented with the financial support of the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme. The project aims to promote cooperation of the Baltic Sea Region states in research, as well as to promote excellence in science and innovations. The project was started on 1 March 2016, when scientific institutions and transnational organisations from Germany, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Poland, as well as Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia became involved in it.
